The current facility is 45 years old and has reached its life expectancy. In 2006, a capacity and condition assessment of the station was completed and was followed by a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to determine the preferred rehabilitation option. In 2008, a consultant was retained to complete the detailed design, obtain approvals, prepare a tender and provide contract administration services. By upgrading the pumping station future capacity demands to accommodate expansion in the west part of the City will be met.
Additionally, the extension of the Palmer Road storm sewer south of Dundas St. W. was identified as being required as a result of a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment that was undertaken in 2008. The EA addressed a flooding issue that occurs downstream and to the east of the current outlet which is just north of the CP railway.
