The staff of the Building Section provide prompt response to applications for building permits and calls for inspection. Experienced staff, qualified under the Ontario Building Code Act provide professional services in all areas of building inspection. This ensures that plan reviews and inspections are conducted efficiently and with a high degree of professionalism.
To ensure Building Officials apply specific standards, a Code of Conduct for Building Officials has been established.
Property Standards fall under Section 15.1(3) of the Building Code Act, S.O. 1992, c.23,
By-Law NO. 2012-79 has been passed by Council for the municipality prescribing the standards for the maintenance and occupancy of property within the municipality provided the official plan for the municipality includes provisions relating to property conditions. Property Standards Complaint Procedure & Form
Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing has launched a new section of their website to explain offences under the Residential Tenancies Act. This new section provides landlords and tenants with easy access to a wealth of information about reporting offences to the Investigation and Enforcement Unit.
There are specific objectives pertaining to building & by-law enforcement:
- expedite the processing of permit applications so as to minimize delays in obtaining permits to proceed
- apply the provisions of the building code and the property standards by-law in a fair and equitable manner, ensuring that matters of public safety are paramount
- ensure that accurate and timely information about the status of all property vis a vis building, work orders or notices of violation, etc is available to the public
- assist applicants and their agents in the permit review process in a manner that promotes the City's good-will
- ensure fair and equitable enforcement of all by-laws under the jurisdiction of the department

Building Permit Fee Information
The following examples, outline the types of work requiring a Building Permit to be taken out:
- construction of new buildings, including a new home or garage
- addition of rooms, a carport, or an attached garage to an existing home
- installation of new rooms or finishing a basement or attic
- interior structural work including installation or re-arrangement of interior partitions
- additions to existing buildings including, but not limited to, decks, garages, carports and other living space
- erecting a tool/storage shed or playhouse larger than 10.0 square meters
- enclosing a porch or roofing over a sundeck
- raising a house to provide a basement or first storey
- construction of a retaining wall over 1 metre in height
- window/door replacement requiring enlargement of the existing openings
- replacing plaster or paneling with drywall
- masonry repairs
- installation of a fireplace or woodstove
- certain types of repairs or renovations (contact staff for clarification)
