Community Garden Plots Open to Citizens of Belleville

On Friday, February 24, the City of Belleville will begin accepting applications from Belleville residents wishing to grow their own vegetables in a community garden. The Community Garden program began in 2012 as an initiative of the City of Belleville’s Green Task Force.

“In addition to growing food, community gardens offer a space where people from different backgrounds and of all ages can connect, share their skills and learn from each other,” says Councilor Egerton Boyce, Chair of the Green Task Force. “They have proven so popular that we have decided to add eight additional plots at the Bayview Heights Community garden this year with the generous support of TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.”

"That community garden plot of earth that I have turned; planted seed and sprout; watered and weeded has gifted me with not only an abundance of vegetables and herbs but blossoming friendships with my fellow gardeners. We share hoses, sprinklers, trowels and tours of each other’s masterpieces. We share praise and produce. We connect with the earth, fresh air and sunshine,” adds Community Gardener and member of the Green Task Force Ruth Hatton.

The only prerequisite for submitting a plot application is that applicants must be a City of Belleville resident. Community gardening can be for anyone. It’s a wonderful opportunity to grow fresh healthy food and meet others wishing to do the same.

Applications are being accepted until March 24th.  A lottery draw takes place each year. Previous community gardeners are required to re-apply each year.
